Circular Economy Business Models Gain Traction

By Lisa Wang
The circular economy concept—designing out waste, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems—is moving from theory to practice across industries. Fashion brands are launching resale and rental platforms. Electronics manufacturers are designing for repairability and offering refurbishment programs. Industrial companies are turning waste streams into valuable inputs for other processes. These circular models often require significant upfront investment in reverse logistics, product design, and customer education. However, companies are finding that the long-term benefits—reduced material costs, new revenue streams, and enhanced brand value—justify the transition. Policy support is accelerating adoption, with extended producer responsibility schemes and right-to-repair legislation creating new incentives for circular design.
