China’s Emissions Fell — But the Bigger Story Is the Race Between Electrification and Grid Reform
China’s CO₂ emissions fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2026, driven by a sharp decline in oil use. Electric vehicles, electric trucks and public transport are increasingly separating mobility growth from fuel consumption. But rising coal generation and renewable curtailment reveal the transition’s central constraint: clean-energy capacity alone is not enough. The next stage depends on grid flexibility, market design, storage and the ability to turn renewable generation into usable electricity.
