For years, sustainability information has mainly lived at company level.

Businesses publish emissions targets, annual reports, ESG strategies and broad statements about recycled content, responsible sourcing or product circularity. These disclosures matter. But they often cannot answer the question customers, regulators and recyclers increasingly need answered:

What do we know about this specific product?

What is it made from? Where did the material originate? Can it be repaired? Does it contain recycled content? Which certifications or environmental claims apply? What should happen when it reaches the end of its usable life?

The answer is increasingly likely to be found in a digital product passport.

The European Commission describes the Digital Product Passport as a digital container for products, components and materials. Depending on the product group, it may contain information on origin, materials, repairability, environmental performance, reuse, recycling and safety, supporting sustainability, circularity and legal compliance.

This is not simply a new labelling exercise. It signals a shift toward product-level environmental intelligence.

The EU’s Digital Product Passport is being developed under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. The Commission’s DPP infrastructure is now live, and product-specific requirements will be set through delegated acts over time.

The details will differ by product category, so businesses should avoid assuming that every product will require identical information on the same timetable.

However, the strategic direction is clear: products placed on the EU market will increasingly need a digital identity supported by accessible, structured and trustworthy information.

For manufacturers and brand owners, this means sustainability data can no longer sit only in an annual report or a supplier spreadsheet. It must become connected to product information management, technical documentation, sourcing records, compliance workflows and customer-facing systems.

For suppliers, it means environmental data will increasingly become part of the commercial relationship—not an optional extra requested once a year in an ESG questionnaire.

Companies do not need to wait for every delegated act before beginning.

A sensible first step is to select one high-priority product line and map the available data. The goal is not to create a perfect passport immediately. It is to expose the gaps.

Ask five questions:

  1. Do we have a unique identifier for each product or product group?

  2. Can we link materials and components to verified supplier information?

  3. Are environmental claims connected to current evidence and a defined methodology?

  4. Can product, compliance, sustainability and marketing teams access the same approved information?

  5. What happens when a material, supplier, design or claim changes?

The answers will reveal whether the organisation has isolated data points or a genuine product-information system.

Build the evidence chain now

The future of sustainability communication is likely to be more specific, more technical and more verifiable.

Digital product passports bring that future closer by linking a product’s physical identity to the evidence behind its environmental story. The strongest businesses will not treat this as a QR-code project delegated to one team.

They will see it as a cross-functional capability connecting product design, procurement, data management, compliance, sustainability and customer trust.

Product-level traceability is becoming a commercial advantage because it enables organisations to make fewer assumptions, respond faster to scrutiny and turn environmental information into better decisions.

The businesses that build that capability early will be more prepared for the regulation—and better positioned to compete in a more transparent, circular market.
