The Global Crackdown on Greenwashing
By James Park
From the EU's Green Claims Directive to the FTC's updated Green Guides in the United States, regulators are taking aim at unsubstantiated environmental marketing claims. The era of vague "eco-friendly" labels is coming to an end.
Companies must now substantiate their environmental claims with scientific evidence and clear methodology. Terms like "carbon neutral" and "net zero" are under particular scrutiny, with regulators demanding transparency about the role of carbon offsets versus actual emissions reductions.
The financial sector is also seeing increased regulation of ESG-labeled investment products, with the EU's Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) requiring detailed disclosures about sustainability claims.
For companies, this regulatory shift requires a fundamental rethinking of sustainability communications—moving from aspirational marketing to evidence-based disclosure.
