Social Sustainability: The S in ESG Takes Center Stage

While environmental issues have dominated ESG discussions, social factors are increasingly central to sustainability strategies and assessments. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of workforce wellbeing, while social movements have driven attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Investors are asking detailed questions about workforce composition, pay equity, employee development programs, and labor practices in supply chains. The EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive will require companies to identify and address human rights and environmental impacts across their value chains. Companies are responding with more sophisticated approaches to human capital management, including real-time employee sentiment tracking, transparent pay reporting, and comprehensive supplier audits. The challenge lies in measurement—social impacts are often harder to quantify than environmental metrics—but emerging standards and frameworks are beginning to provide more consistent approaches.
