Three Green Bonds That Moved Markets This Week: Egypt, Vietnam, Turkey

Regulatory debates about ESRS revisions and SFDR labels absorbed most of the sustainable finance community's attention this week. In parallel, three issuances demonstrated something quieter but equally important: the geography of green capital is expanding, and the variety of instruments being used to deploy it is growing.

Egypt issued 80 billion yen — approximately $500 million — in sustainability-linked Samurai bonds in Japan, backed by a partial credit guarantee from the African Development Bank Group. The transaction marks Egypt's latest use of the Japanese Samurai bond market to diversify funding sources and reduce borrowing costs, and it is backed by a structure that aligns investor returns with sustainability performance. For an economy managing a difficult macroeconomic transition while seeking to attract long-term capital, the issuance signals that sustainable debt instruments are becoming a standard tool in the sovereign financing toolkit.

In South-East Asia, Singapore-based Verdant — backed by A.P. Moller Capital — secured Vietnam's first certified green commercial and industrial solar bond, its inaugural capital markets issuance globally. The bond will finance the expansion of rooftop solar across Vietnamese commercial and industrial sites, a segment of the market that has historically been underserved by project finance. Certification to a recognised green bond standard, combined with a global investor base, sets a template for similar transactions across the region.

In Turkey, Garanti BBVA issued a €30 million one-year green bond to finance climate adaptation in agriculture — a sector highly exposed to water stress and extreme weather. The bond channels capital toward making Turkish farming more resilient. Small in size, significant in direction.
