Understanding the EU CSRD Requirements for 2024

By Sarah Chen
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) represents a significant evolution in sustainability reporting requirements for companies operating in or with the European Union. Coming into effect in phases starting from 2024, the CSRD expands the scope of sustainability reporting to include nearly 50,000 companies. Key requirements include double materiality assessments, detailed environmental metrics, social responsibility indicators, and governance structures. Companies must report on their entire value chain, including Scope 3 emissions and biodiversity impacts. The CSRD mandates third-party assurance of sustainability reports, bringing ESG disclosures closer to the rigor expected of financial reporting. This shift requires companies to invest in robust data collection systems and internal controls. For companies already reporting under frameworks like GRI or SASB, the transition may be smoother, but the comprehensive nature of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) will require additional disclosures in most cases.
